Today was our first day on the 90 day adventure of reading through the Bible. Although it is not my intention to blog everyday about our reading, I wanted to comment on our first series of chapters.
Our reading today was Genesis chapters 1-16. Here are a few thoughts:
- Genesis 3 changes everything. What we see now throughout the remainder of the OT is the seed of the serpent fighting with the seed of the woman. Thankfully we have 3:15 to ground our hope: “he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.” What is fascinating is when we read 16 chapters in one sitting, we see how the seed of the serpent seems to be winning! Able is murdered, the “sons of god” commit extreme acts of perversion, the world is marked only by sin, and on and on. Yet, chapter 12 shows God making that incredible and crucial covenant with Abram. He is still in control!
- Chapter 14 is brutal when it comes to keeping kings straight. Maybe one day I will be able to master all these kings and their territories. That day is not today.
- We already see so much of Jesus in these 16 chapters. As I read, I want to be reading Christologically. If I fail to do that, then I am not reading it as Christian text. And, of course, that is how the apostles read the OT. So, I think I am safe in following their lead.
